Million Lashes Collage1

I was walking through the makeup aisles yesterday and saw a display for the limited edition L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara in Denim Shades, which is a blue mascara.  I got excited and had to get it home to try.

The Claims

  • No clumps
  • Blue shade
  • Amplifies each lash to build breathtaking volume

True Beauty Junkie Assessment

When I bought this mascara I was picturing a dark denim wash of blue on voluminous lashes.  I thought that this was going to be amazing, with the blue color making the whites of my eyes look even whiter, while the formula pumped up the volume of my lashes.  What I got was… well, take a look:

Lashes No MascaraThese are my eyes with no mascara on at all.  I have foundation and concealer on, but no eyeliner or anything that would mask the look or performance of the mascara.

Lashes With MascaraThese are my eyes after applying the Voluminous Million Lashes Denim Shade mascara.  What’s that you say?  Where’s the blue?  I have no idea.  Where is the “breathtaking volume?”  MIA.  Where are the million lashes?  Umm… I see twentyish, not a million.  I tried to build this up with multiple coats, I tried to get the blue to pop.  I tried!  It wasn’t happening.  I was so disappointed in this mascara.  Aside from the fact that the blue shade didn’t show up AT ALL,  the formula itself was terrible.  When the product is called “Voluminous Million Lashes,” one would tend to believe that the mascara would give you… well… volume and the appearance of lots of lashes.  This didn’t work on any front.

Maybe if you have really light lashes, and you apply multiple coats, this might show up better for you.  Might.  If you have any sort of color to your lashes this will be a big disappointment.

Bottom Line

Don’t waste $7 on this mascara.  So disappointing.  This has made my top 3 list of the worst performing mascaras that I’ve tried – and I have tried a lot.

Review: Tarte Aqualillies Waterproof Eye and Cheek Palette – I Don’t Think So

  • Posted on June 15, 2013 at 12:22 am

Tarte Aqualillies Collage

I typically love Tarte cosmetics, so I was immediately drawn to the Aqualillies Waterproof Eye and Cheek Palette.  Summer = Focus on Waterproof Makeup  for me, as you can tell by my recent posts.  I have seen YouTube videos raving about this palette, and read comments on the Tarte site about how wonderful it is.  I was incredibly shocked at the polar opposite reaction I had to it after swatching it and testing it for transfer and it’s waterproof staying power.

Tarte Aqualillies Waterproof Eye and Cheek Palette – The Claims

  • Waterproof
  • Fade-free, flawless finish
  • Lasts up to 12 hours

True Beauty Junkie Assessment

In a word – NO.  It’s just that simple.  I didn’t find any of the claims to be true.  In fact, they didn’t even come close!

I’ll start with the swatches from the palette.  Normally if I do swatches I try to just do one pass at the color so that you can see the minimum color payoff you would receive using the product.  I had no lotion or primer or any other product on my arm, just bare skin.  With this palette I had to go over, and over, and OVER just to get the colors to show up on my arm – and I am still sporting my winter white skin, no tan in sight yet.

Aqualillies Palette Swatches1

There is nothing exceptional about the colors in this palette, especially when swatched.  The pigmentation is horrible, there are three very frosty shades that are so close to the highlight color it’s really a waste to include them, and the one color that I was hoping would be a beautiful pop of turquoise in the otherwise neutral palette (Poolside) barely showed up on my arm.

I would normally show you swatches after a rub test and then after running them under water, but in this case the swatches didn’t even make it past the rub test.  If I were to show you my arm after lightly rubbing over the swatches (after letting them sit for a few minutes) you would just see my bare arm with a little sparkle left over.  Literally nothing stayed in place.  On a separate occasion I didn’t rub them but went straight to the water test  and they still completely disappeared.

Bottom Line

I generally love Tarte, so it pains me to give them a negative review.  This palette is not waterproof, not fade-free and certainly not going to last 12 hours on your skin.  Skip it.  Use the $38.00 somewhere else – anywhere else would be better spent than on this palette.

** I can’t reiterate enough that this review applies only to the Aqualillies palette.  Tarte has so many other awesome palettes and products that are worth checking out.  They just really missed the boat with this one.

I was browsing the Ulta website’s clearance section and had my jaw drop when I came across the Urban Decay Mariposa Palette.  Originally $39.00, it is currently on sale for only $15.00!  I cleaned my glasses, double-checked, and it’s true – 10 gorgeous, pigmented shades of Urban Decay’s rich eye shadow for your enjoyment.

Lets Talk Colors

Urban Decay Mariposa Palette1What I love about this palette is that there is a sprinkling of vibrant, spring/summer shades among the beautiful neutrals.  I will likely live in this palette over the coming weeks and months.  I can’t resist the shades!  It should be noted that they are all shimmers, and some have glitter mixed in as well.

Urban Decay Mariposa Swatches1Swatches From Top Row:

Rockstar – Deep plum/aubergine

Gunmetal – Dark metallic gray with silver glitter

Skimp – Pale butter cream

The pictures really don’t do them justice.  You should take advantage of the sale and get this palette home to you to play with.  You can’t beat that price for anything from Urban Decay!

NYX Slide On Pencil Eyeliner – Slide On and (Sometimes) Slide Off

“I think I would die without my eyeliner, but besides that I’m pretty basic.” ~ Avril Lavigne

NYX Collage

I love me some Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils, but the price has had me on a dupes search for ages.  I recently watched a YouTube video that listed the NYX Slide On Pencils as the perfect inexpensive alternative to my Urban Decay favorites.  NYX Cosmetics has a dazzling range of colors for eyeliners, shadows, and blush; everything from basic neutrals (your white, cream, brown and black variations) to the extreme (neon craziness and bright, bold colors).  I decided to give the Slide On Pencils a try and picked up four of them  in Purple Blaze (a violet purple), Tropical Green (a rich, deep green), Golden Bronze (a vibrant, pure bronze), and Brown Perfection (a deep brown).

NYX Cosmetics Slide On Pencils – The Claims

  • Waterproof
  • Doesn’t smear
  • Doesn’t smudge
  • Delivers powerful, robust colors
  • Like a liquid eyeliner without the mess

True Beauty Junkie Assessment

I’m finding that within the same line of pencils you can have colors that truly live up to the claims, as well as those that do not.  It’s quite frustrating.  These NYX Slide On Pencils are a perfect example of that.  Let me take you through the swatches:

1 NYX Slide On Eyeliner On Wrist

1:  Here are the colors simply swatched onto my arm.  My only comment after I first swatched them was that I was slightly disappointed that the Purple Blaze wasn’t as “blazing” as the name implied.  It is still a pretty shade; it just appeared to be a bit washed out straight out of the gate.  I loved the Tropical Green, and that Golden Bronze is gorgeous!

2 NYX Slide On Eyeliner Rub Test

2:  The next thing I did was the dreaded smudge test.  Just to be clear, I waited several minutes before touching the liner, to really give it time to set.  Right away my excitement over the Tropical Green diminished some, as it slid all over the place.  The Blazing Purple basically faded to an almost lilac shade.  The Golden Bronze shocked the bajeezus out of me by not moving or fading at all.  When I originally saw how shiny it was I thought, “That will be the first to go.”  It proved me wrong.  Brown Perfection lost some of it’s dark pigmentation, but didn’t spread across my skin as much as the Tropical Green.

3 NYX Slide On Eyeliner Water Test

3: Bring on the water!  What I noticed is that the water didn’t change the swatches much after the smudge test.  And unfortunately, the water didn’t remove any of the smearing lines from that Tropical Green.

4 NYX Slide On Eyeliner Water Rub Test

4:  Just like with the other eyeliner tests I’ve done, after the swatches are wet I see how they handle being rubbed again.  This was the first time that I’ve had an eyeliner bead and pill up.  It looked like back in the day when I was a kid and would put a thin layer of Elmer’s Glue on my hand, let it dry, and then rub it off so it looked like my skin was sloughing off.  (Don’t ask why I found that so much fun to do haha).  The Tropical Green and Blazing Purple both had that same beading happening.

Water Line Wear:

Before I give the Bottom Line, I wanted to also let you know that I tried the Blazing Purple and the Golden Bronze in my water line (on separate days of course!) to see how they worked.  When I put on the Blazing Purple the color was sooo light, it was difficult to make out.  It faded to nothing after a few hours.  Golden Bronze initially went on like a pumpkin orange.  I thought I looked a little ill haha.  But after a few minutes it seemed to oxidize and darken a bit, which was a better look.  Unfortunately after a few hours it also disappeared from my water line.

Bottom Line:

I will be returning all of these liners.  I’m sure the people at Ulta will just LOVE me, but I really can’t justify keeping them.  I want to find something that will stay in my water line and also function  just as well as my regular eye liner.  I certainly didn’t find them to be “like a liquid liner” at all.  You aren’t going to get a precision line from these pencils.  As you can see in the pictures, some of them do smear and smudge quite easily.  I found that they basically held up in water, but not in my water line.  So unfortunately, my quest for a true Urban Decay 24/7 drugstore dupe will continue.

Let me know what you think about these liners.  What was your experience?  Have you found any eyeliners that work just as well as the Urban Decay 24/7s?  What is your favorite water line eyeliner?  Leave your comments below, I’d love to hear from you.  :)

Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof Mascara: Where You Goin’? NOWHERE!

  • Posted on May 1, 2013 at 5:24 pm

Waterproof Mascara: Mascara that comes off if you cry, shower, or swim…but not when you try to remove it.

For many, many years that’s exactly how I felt about waterproof mascara.  It’s close to summer time, and all I want is a true waterproof mascara that won’t leave me looking like Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love the movie.  I just don’t want to look like him!  Last week I said enough is enough and headed to my local Ulta.  I was determined to pick up several waterproof mascaras and have a testing extravaganza!  Wonder of wonders, I actually found a mascara that truly is waterproof.  (Queue the choir of angels).

Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof Mascara – The Claims

  • 8 Times Bigger Lashes
  • Fast-glide formula keeps lashes smooth
  • Zero clumps guaranteed
  • Removes easily with soap and water
  • Waterproof

True Beauty Junkie Assessment

Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Sorry, I was taking a moment for a little happy dance.

This mascara truly is waterproof, let’s get that out of the way right now.  I don’t think I had 8 times bigger lashes, but it definitely gave me volume and length with no clumping after two coats.   “Removes easily with soap and water?”  No way, Jose.  This mascara is not coming off without some oil and a prayer.

I initially drenched my eyes with water… it didn’t budge.  Then I took out my Philosophy Purity cleanser – no impact on it whatsoever.  I scrubbed and I swear the mascara laughed at me a little.  I took out my La Fresh Waterproof Makeup Remover Wipes, ready to battle.  The were able to remove some of the mascara, but definitely didn’t take all of it off.  I then had to pull out the big guns – Almay Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Pads.  That finally did the trick.

1: No mascara on my eye

1: No mascara on my eye

1:  This is my eye without any mascara on.  I am wearing some Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Brown.  I was also trying the Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl eyeliner in Deep Blue on my water line.  (Reviews on those items will be in separate posts coming up!)

2: One Coat of The Rocket

2: One Coat of The Rocket

2:  This is what my eye looked like after one coat of Maybelline’s The Rocket Waterproof Mascara.

3: Two Coats of The Rocket

3: Two Coats of The Rocket

3:  Here is what two coats of The Rocket looked like on my eyes.  It’s important to state that you should NOT wait for the first coat to dry before adding the second.  Slap it on their quick; you don’t want it to dry on you!

4: After Soap and Water

4: After Soap and Water

4:  First, I’m sorry that I look a little cross-eyed in this picture.  I’m blaming it on my complete disbelief that the mascara is still in tact after using my Purity on it at the end of the night.

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for a true waterproof mascara to carry you through the summer months – this is the one to try!  The thing to keep in mind is that the focus is on the fact that it is waterproof.  I’ve seen comments on Ulta’s website about how it didn’t give people amazing volume or length, and I wanted to shake them a little.  Finding a truly waterproof mascara that does ANYTHING to your lashes is amazing.  Typically you end up with racoon eyes with the first tear or drop of water – not with this!

Let me know what you think about this mascara in the comments below.  Tell me your stories about others you’ve tried, I want to hear about your experiences!
